Pokémon cards are part of a collectible card game based around the video games series which was originally introduced in Japan in 1996 and subsequently in North America in 1998. Pokémon cards remain as one of the last remaining links to, Japanese media giant, Nintendo’s heritage as a playing card company. Being one of the largest trading card games to hit the western hemisphere, part of the success of Pokémon cards has derived from the popularity of the Pokémon video game and animated series.

The Pokémon cards were officially introduced in October 1996 in Japan after the success of the video game – the collection contained 102 Pokémon cards and became very popular. Once released overseas Pokémon cards began to grow as more and more different cards were being released to compensate the demand.
